Electrodessication and Curettage
What is electrodessication and curettage?
Electrodessication and curettage, or “ED&C” is a medical procedure commonly used to remove small skin lesions or growths, such as warts, skin tags, and some types of cancerous or pre-cancerous skin growths.
A local anesthetic is injected into the skin around the area being to be treated to numb the area and ensure patient comfort during the procedure.
The procedure involves two steps: electrodessication and curettage. During electrodessication, a thin metal probe is placed in contact with the surface of the tissue, and an electric current is passed through the probe to heat and destroy the tissue. The heat also coagulates the blood vessels in the area, which helps to minimize bleeding.
After the electrodessication step, the tissue is removed or scraped out using a small, sharp tool called a curette. The curette is used to scoop out the remaining tissue and any remaining cells, and to smooth the edges of the wound.
Some of the benefits include:
- Effective removal: ED&C is a highly effective way to remove small skin lesions and growths, often with only one treatment session.
- Minimally invasive: ED&C is a minimally invasive procedure that can be performed in a doctor’s office or clinic using a local anesthetic, which means it typically involves less pain and discomfort than more invasive procedures.
- Quick recovery: Because ED&C only targets the affected tissue, recovery time is generally quick. Most people are able to return to their normal activities within a few days to a week after the procedure.
- Reduced scarring: Because the procedure only targets the affected tissue, scarring is typically minimal compared to more invasive procedures.
- Cost-effective: ED&C is generally less expensive than more invasive procedures and can be a cost-effective option for removing small skin lesions and growths.
It’s important to note that not all skin lesions or growths are suitable for ED&C, and that the procedure does carry some risks and potential complications including pain, bleeding, infection, scarring, and changes in skin color or texture. Dr. Stees will discuss the risks and benefits of the procedure and determine whether it is a suitable treatment option for your condition.
The combination of electrodessication and curettage is effective for treating a variety of skin conditions, particularly small or superficial growths. It is generally a safe and quick procedure that can be performed in a doctor’s office or clinic, often with only a local anesthetic.
